Problem
Ultramoderna is an original typeface design that combines a gridded system and geometric shapes to create a design grounded in futurism.
A typeface for a new world.
With an ever-expanding selection of typefaces, designs often feel like subtle iterations of one another. Straying too far from legibility may inadvertently cause complications for the reader, while designs too strict in guidelines will appear too generic. The answer? Create with a foundation that has the capacity to be broken. By first establishing a grid system, the typeface inherits a consistency across all letterforms that may then be altered to yield an original design.

Concept
Driven by innovation.
When creating Ultramoderna, the letterforms began as very rigid given the nature of the grid system. To avoid an 8-bit treatment, rounded curves were introduced through forms of circles. While the letterforms still have traces of those sharper edges, the rounded curves create a much needed sense of harmony. Intersecting points found in the letterforms such as X and Q also have an added element of the circle shape.

Design System

To keep the letterforms cohesive, an 8x8 grid system was first established before the development process. Inspired by Bauhaus design, shapes adhered to basic geometric shapes, notably varying degrees of circles when defining curves and strokes. Through a balanced use of sharp and rounded edges, a sleek futuristic typeface was adopted.

Solution
For the future.
The final design for Ultramoderna prioritizes sleek and cyber shapes that establishes a sense of the futurism. The same way in which midcentury typefaces are created to elicit feelings of both antiquity and modernity, Ultramoderna aims to embody both the present and the future. Serving as a display typeface, Ultramoderna is made for those who aspire to integrate innovation and an ultramodern perspective to their own designs.
